Mining - About Mining
What is Mining
Mining involves the extraction of minerals or materials from the earth. Common materials mined include bauxite, coal, copper, gold, silver, diamonds, iron, precious metals, lead, limestone, magnesite, nickel, phosphate, oil shale, rock salt, tin, uranium and molybdenum.
Any material that cannot be grown from agricultural processes, or created artificially in a laboratory or factory, is usually mined.
Material that are mined are usually non-renewable resources.
In most forms of surface mining, heavy equipment, such as earthmovers, first remove the overburden - the soil and rock above the deposit. Next, huge machines, such as dragline excavators, extract the mineral.
